Charles (member of ETC coffeehouse) decorates his house with hundreds of lights, Santas, trains, music boxes, and other amazing holiday treasures! Different every year, it is definitely something you want to see here!

We will be going This Friday in two trips one at 4:30 and another at 5:15 the drive is short and it will not take long for you to look around and take pictures next to decorated Christmas trees and try some of his home made fudge and holiday snacks!

After you are done carving you can take them home or leave them to display your work to others at ETC!

Budrus - foreign film

Budrus is an award-winning feature documentary film about a Palestinian community organizer, Ayed Morrar, who unites local Fatah and Hamas members along with Israeli supporters in an unarmed movement to save his village of Budrus from destruction by Israel's Separation Barrier. Success eludes them until his 15-year-old daughter, Iltezam, launches a women's contingent that quickly moves to the front lines. Struggling side by side, father and daughter unleash an inspiring, yet little-known, movement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories that is still gaining ground today. In an action-filled documentary chronicling this movement from its infancy, Budrus shines a light on people who choose nonviolence to confront a threat. The movie is directed by award-winning filmmaker Julia Bacha (co-writer and editor of Control Room and co-director Encounter Point), and produced by Bacha, Palestinian journalist Rula Salameh, and filmmaker and human rights advocate Ronit Avni (formerly of WITNESS, Director of Encounter Point).

Sweet Corn Festival!

What exactly is the Sweetcorn Festival?
The Urbana Sweetcorn Festival is THE largest Champaign County festival! Over 50,000 community members come out to enjoy hot buttery sweetcorn and finish up the summer with a bang! The festival offers tons of musical entertainment from local bands, to national acts.

When is the Sweetcorn Festival and what hours can I attend?
August 26th from 5pm - 11pm
August 27th from 11am - 11pm

What types of food can I expect?

Sweet Corn (only 50cents)

Each year is different in the selection of food vendors, but what is the same year to year is the variety that is offered. You can come out to grab BBQ, Greek, ice creams, funnel cakes, Thai and so much more. Check our

vendor page to see exactly what you will see for this year!

Where is the event?
Downtown Urbana! Main Street will be closed from Race to Vine and Race/Broadway will be closed as well. All streets will be programmed with food, fun and music!

Jarod will be going to The Sweet Corn Festival on Saturday Evening and All International Students are welcome to come, ask Jarod on Friday for the time to meet at ETC.

Will be joining together to go on this massive trip down Turkey Run river!

Groups will canoe down the river to a beach where we will share a huge lunch and meet lots of new people from many places and ways of life, play games on the beach and enjoy the weather next to the river. U of I Campus during Unofficial

This week we will be discussing St. Patricks Day, and what it means to not only Americans but to a college campus, U of I has one of the biggest custom Holidays for St. Particks, called "Unofficial". People from all over on other campuses actually fly into champaign to partake in this Holiday...it is HUGE. on the left is a picture of people out on lawns dressed in green at 10am in the morning and already drunk and playing games. We will be talking about how it all got started and what to avoid on this this day (it can be dangerous sometimes but also fun)

Christmas Lights

Christmas Time!

Aside from the dreaded finals we all face there is a lot going on and it's mostly a ton of people (especially Americans making a fuss over the Christmas Holiday) decorate our house and keep shopping more for friends, family, and people we pretend to like...okay maybe not that last one, however it's still very intense and there is a LOT of fun things that happen.

Parade of Lights Set for Saturday, December 4th 6:00pm

Once again, the streets of Downtown Champaign will come alive with lights and sounds as the 10th Annual Parade of Lights steps off on December 4, 2010. Over 40 entries and marching bands will fill the streets with the "Sounds of the Season". This years route is being shortened and will no longer encircle West Side Park but that doesn't mean the parade will anything less than spectacular. The parade steps off at 6PM and will once again be followed by the Tree Lighting in the One Main Plaza and a visiting are with Santa Claus under the tree. Children and their families are also being invited to the Orpheum Children's Science Museum following this years parade for fun and games.

A few details to help make the night even more special!

Parking is Free in all city lots and the Hill Street Parking Deck
Carolers and Bell Choirs will be spread throughout Downtown before the parade to keep the crowd entertained
If there is bad weather, the make up day will be the next day, Sunday December 5th at 6:00 PM
The intersection of Main, Church and Neil will close at 1:30 PM on Saturday for set-up
The Parade route will close at 5:45 PM and remain closed throughout the duration of the parade
University Avenue will remain open during this years parade

this is not an official ETC event, but open to the public and easy to get to through the Busses on campus going to the Illinois Terminal (bus/train station)

Annual Hanging of the Greens, happening this Sunday! Dec 5th

Feel free to come to all or part of the festivities: Familiar faces will be there to show you what to do and explain how to make decorations for your own Christmas tree or the giant tree that will be standing in the red carpet lounge next to the cafe' (Watseka)

4:30pm - Ornament making, Watseka Lounge

6:00pm - Light dinner/caroling, Great Hall

7:00pm - Kingdom Singers present "Love Came Down at Christmas," Sanctuary

Next Friday we will have Pumpkins and Carving equipment to make Jack O' Lanterns! this is a traditional American activity and is a lot of fun! If you like your pumpkin you can take it home or take pictures with it and your friends!

Fall Field Trips

October 15th - Hay Ride
We will be meeting up at ETC at 4:30 and then leaving as soon as possible, in cars to Turkey Run National Park! After that we will be going on a hay ride to meet some other Americans and international students from the Purdue college and share stories, soon after we will ride back to camp and make a huge fire to make smores, and have dinner together :-)

at 8:30 this night there will be a live band named Street level doppler, that will be playing at the cafe', there will also be food and other drinks served and if we are lucky we can set up the fireplace and have hot chocolate, by the fire!!

Vocab: Buttercups: Flowers...cheap ones that grow wild, very common.
"Travis" is singing about he was late buying flowers for his girlfriend and did not have anything else special...so got buttercup flowers for his girlfriends (through out the years he never learned his lesson, and always waited last minute...but the girls did not care about the meaning...only that they were worthless flowers, and he did not remember in time to get real flowers or gifts)

It confermed! We are going to the Gardens Saturday afternoon to take pictures and see many different flowers that grow in the midwest, and to see the architecture of a Japan house and the peace gardens surrounding it.
Saturday, September 25 at 10:30 We will be meeting at ETC and at 11:00am we will catch the local bus and ride about 5 min to the Garden's after that you can stay as long or short as you would like, or follow me and my friends around and I can teach you about many of the plants and take lots of pictures!.

This weekend Wesley (main building ETC is in) will be having a Service Project (This is a great chance to meet American Students and have fun doing something that helps out others)
Sunday, September 19 at 12:30 We will be doing some easy landscaping work around the grounds of Wesley. Hamburgers and veggie burgers will be available throughout the afternoon for volunteers.

Where: ETC Cafe' and around the whole Building
When: Sunday 19th 12:30pm (Afternoon)
What to bring : yourself, maybe a change of clothes but there is things to do that will not be messy!

Japan House:
Next Week there is a chance for us to go to the Japan house before it gets too cold and Flowers start to fade! The temperature is getting Cooler in the afternoon's which is the perfect time to go outside and visit the Arboretum and the Japan House and Gardens!

arranging a Trip to Arcola, home of the "Amish". People that live in old
ways of frontiering* (living off the land), choosing this way of no

-On the 16th we will be going to LeRoy county 40 min. north. There, we will be able to Learn how to ride horses and go along trails through forest and across fields, see a lake and take beautiful pictures. Also there is nature trails that Jarod will show you and give opportunities for pictures with breathtaking scenery.

Pastor Rob will be In Thailand for a year

Going Away Coffee for Pastor Rob Pastor Rob and his family will be leaving for Thailand on June 20th for a year long Spiritual Renewal Leave (aka sabbatical). His wife Darcie will be teaching at an English Speaking International School in Nantaburi. The kids will be there keeping up with school work and learning about their birth country. Rob will be working on a number of personal learning objectives so he can return to Wesley even more excited about all of the wonderful things going on.

Jarod, Yumin and Dylan will be leading the Coffeehouse this year

Many of you have gotten to know Jarod Spohrer as he has helped with the coffeehouse for well over a year. He will have a primary lead in keeping the coffeehouse running. We've also created a new Registered Student Organization to raise our profile on Campus. Yumin Lee will be the president of this new group.

Dylan Boot will be responsible for student programs during Rob's spiritual leave (aka sabbatical).

Dylan was an active student here at Wesley about 7 years ago and has returned to the area after completing a masters degree in Rehab Counseling and working at a number of community centers.

He comes to us with a passion for working with college students and clear bent of supporting and encouraging student leadership.

Officially he will be starting on August 1st but you might get lucky and bump into him before that. Starting August 1 (and perhaps sooner) you can get him at his work email campus_minister@wesleyui.org

Summer Field Trips

June 26th- Tour Urbana: East of Campus during the afternoon
Urbana is also called by some as "old town" and it looks it as it has not had as much development as Champaign has been doing over the many years, this however is nice to see as there is building here that have been standing the test of time and have a comfortable small town feel that put's your mind at ease. The style of stores and restaurants also is unique from those of the mall in Champaign and cater to a more specific demographic. Jarod will show you artwork painted on sides of buildings, and many of the stores

July 10th- Amish Trip: Leaving at ~10:00 Saturday, 45min drive
The various Amish (pronounced AH-mish) are known for simple living, plain dress, and practice ways of doing everything by hand without the aid of modern technology. We will drive to Rock home gardens and be guided around their community and see how things are done in old style ways, and enjoy home cooked food that has been made with care and to perfection. See country side and breath fresh air and maybe take something away from the experience that will open your eyes to see how people can have a fulfilling life without all the modern technology and be happy

Jul 16th- Horseback Riding:
This trip is designed for the adventures! We will be traveling to Le Roy county, only 45 minutes away! Last year our group went and had a great time riding horses along deep forest paths and across prairie land. They have very well trained horses, so if you are afraid as a first timer, you need not worry. They will teach you all you will need to know to enjoy your self! Afterword there is a lake that great to skip rocks across the water, and nature trails and scenery to take pictures! (personally one of my favorite trips of the summer)

Jul 31st- Tour Champaign: West of Campus,
One of the most educational trips you may take with us as you will have a chance to see useful shops and food places to take friends you meet while you are here. There is a lot beautiful architecture Downtown and comfortable Cafe's with unique snacks and treats, a place called ten thousand Villages that sells items from around the world (great for gifts, or decoration for your home), A chocolate Shop that serves to your sweet side that also has many gift worthy items and a smell in the atmosphere that will make you want to stay forever! We will stop for a quick lunch and talk about things you have seen around the town

Aug 6th- Tour Japan House/Arboretum: On Campus, Lincoln ave. and Florida ave. (10 min. bus/car ride)

With moving into the Summer we will get more and more flowers blooming and the arboretum is Definitely the place to go as you see so many colors everywhere, Shade under full leafed trees of many variety and Last but not least the Beautiful Japan House. Made many years ago in recognition of Japanese Culture, they do Tea Ceremonies and open houses to show people what a traditional Japan house looks like and the gardens and sculptures are always accessible and very pretty to look at and take pictures, including a peace fountain, the whole experience is very "Zen" and something you don't want to miss
