***A few thoughts about churches in Champaign Urbana responding to International persons***

We welcome you, your ideas, and your cultures as equals as we journey down this path of life together.

Programs for Internationals offered through the Wesley Foundation are designed to offer hospitality (a generous and warm reception of guests), to experience cultural exchange and to assist internationals in various ways (like learning English, understanding American culture, answering questions, or for our bible studies, understanding Christianity). You do not need to be a Christian to attend any of our programs nor do we judge our success on how many Christians we "make." We believe that we are all strengthened by our mutual exchanges of ideas and cultures. While we are willing to share our stories of faith, we are also excited to hear your stories of faith. Our success is based on the hospitality we have offered, the friendships we have made and the assistance we have provided. We do not believe that one church (even ours) has the only right understanding of Christianity or faith. We will not speak ill of other churches but would be willing to discuss differences that we may hold with other churches in our area and address any concerns you may have.

Due to deep mud, flooded water and rain forcast we will NOT be fishing Friday

I regret that we will not be able to go fishing this Friday. We will schedule to go later this summer.

Volunteers Needed For Wesley Food Pantry May 20-21st

Grocery BagEach month our Wesley Foundation serves over 800 persons in need a week's worth of groceries. This is a huge undertaking as we convert our foundation into a food pantry (grocery store) each third Thursday of the month. We need to unload a semi's worth of food, set up tables open boxes and direct traffic. At the end of the evening we need to tear it all down and clean up. You do not need to speak English to help as much of it is "manual labor." This is a great way to see another side of America.

Food Pantry volunteers are needed for many jobs throughout the month, but especially the days and hours leading up to, and through, distribution on the evening of the 3rd Thursday of the month (the 21st of May)

All volunteers must have attended one training session before working during distribution on Thursday May 21st.
Training times for May are Thursday 14-May at 5:30pm and Wednesday May 20 at 7:00p. Training lasts about an hour.

Some of the times you can volunteer include (you do not need to work the full time slot):
Wed. May 20th 12:30-3:00 pm Truck Unloading, 18 persons each hour
Wed. May 20th 6:30 - 9:00 pm Food Set Up, 20 persons each hour
Thurs. May 21st 4:00 - 9:00 pm Food Distribution 35+ persons each hour
Thurs. May 21st 8:00 - 10:00 pm Cleanup 18 persons each hour

If you have questions or would like to sign up online for a volunteer time slot please contact Candice at pantryvol@wesleyui.orgThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Free Mini Class on Christianity in America offered this Friday

Statue of Liberty and CrossFree class on "Christianity in America and Denominations" will be offered this Friday from 2:30 - 4pm in the Etc. Coffeehouse.

Or if you live at either Daniels or Orchard Downs, I would be happy to arrange to have these classes taught on site. Please let me know.

We make every effort to present these studies in as fair and balanced manner as possible to help international persons understand and navigate through "Christian" America. I promise you will not be pressured in any way to adopt any beliefs (see statement at the bottom of this email).

Christianity in America and Denominations
Why are there so many different churches in the United States? What are the differences between the denominations (Catholic, Baptist, Methodist Etc.)?

Reverend Rob Kirby is an ordained United Methodist Minister and has been serving at the Wesley
RobFoundation for the past six years. He completed his Masters of Divinity degree from Boston University in 1998. He has taught international bible studies for 6 years. He is the president of the Interfaith Religious Workers Association at the University of Illinois that represents over 40 religious groups that serve the University of Illinois. He is married and the father of 3 children.

See a High School Musical this weekend - Curtains at Urbana High

Have you ever wondered what an American High School was like? Why not come to the Urbana High School Musical (singing drama) this weekend? It is inexpensive, fun and an easy walk from either campus or Orchard Downs.

Curtains, the hilarious new musical whodunit that was a must-see hit of the 2007-2008 Broadway season, playing over 500 performances, holds its Champaign-Urbana premiere on Thursday, April 30, with performances on Friday, May 1; Saturday, May 2; Friday, May 8; and Saturday, May 9.

During its New York run, Curtains won nine Drama Desk Awards and eight 2007 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (David Hyde Pierce).

Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m.
Saturday, May 9 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are available from at the door, or by contacting UHS at 217-384-3505. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12. Some mature language and themes may make the show not suitable for younger children. All shows are at Urbana High School, 1002 S. Race Street in Urbana, in Cobb Auditorium.
